Humidity-controlled drying and storage for electronic components

In surface mount technology (SMT) applications, the desiccant dry box is critical for storing sensitive components such as solder paste, circuit boards, and other electronic components that may be affected by humidity.

High ambient humidity can cause electronic components to absorb moisture, especially during reflow soldering. This phenomenon is known as “popcorning,” in which moisture trapped in a component rapidly expands when heated, causing internal pressure and potential damage.

Working Principle

The desiccant dry box adopts active dehumidifying system to maintain low humidity levels, automatically adjusting humidity. This allows sensitive items to be stored safely and protected from moisture-related issues and electrostatic discharge (ESD).

The dehumidifying system is controlled by a microcomputer. When the internal humidity is high, it starts to absorb moisture; when the humidity reaches the set value, it stops absorbing water and discharges water outside. This process is automatic control.

This chart shows, in the ambient 25 degree C, humidity 50%RH, open door 30 seconds and then close, the humidity can recover to the set point within 30 minutes.

Yes, the minimum adjustable height is 25MM.

Relative humidity is a very sensitive coefficient and is easily affected by the external environment. Therefore, the recovery time depends on many factors, such as the door opening time, surrounding environment, and storage items. Under normal circumstances, when the ambient temperature is 25 deg C and the humidity is < 60%RH, if the door opening time is within 15 seconds, the humidity can reach below 5%RH within 15-30 minutes.

Some electronic components, such as PCB, BGA, IC, chips, etc., require low humidity storage environment. Desiccant storage cabinets can control humidity and protect them from moisture immersion, making drying cabinets the optimal choice for storing electronic components. Electronic devices in the process of operation, semi-finished products in packaging for the next process, unused ICs, BGAs, PCBs after unpacking, devices waiting in the oven, devices waiting for temperature to be returned after baking, and unpackaged finished products can be damaged by moisture.

The humidity sensor accuracy is +/-2%RH, the long-term drift is <0.25%RH/yr, and we have calibrated every unit before ex-factory. We suggest that no need calibration is required for the first 2 years, if it is indeed required, we recommend using the ROTRONIC, Swiss-made hygrometer HP21, HP22 or HP23.
